Ifach - A Natural Wonder
In Calpe, on the Costa Blanca, the Peñón de Ifach rises proudly above the Mediterranean Sea. This gigantic 332-metre-high rock is not only a landmark, but also one of the most beautiful places to hike and enjoy an insane view. The climb is an adventure in itself, tough, but absolutely worth it.
Whether you are an experienced hiker or just fancy a special challenge, the Ifach offers a unique experience in the middle of nature. With steep paths, beautiful views and a good dose of adrenaline, it's a hike you won't soon forget.
The route to the summit
The hike starts at the Peñón de Ifach Natural Park, where you first pass a visitor centre. Here you can get some info on the nature and animals you will encounter along the way. The first part of the route is fine. A good path with a few nice viewpoints where you can enjoy the view in advance.
But after about half an hour of hiking, the route changes. You have to go through a tunnel carved into the rock, and from there it gets a lot rougher. The paths are narrow, sometimes steep and full of loose stones. On some stretches, there are cables you can hang on to. This part of the climb is quite tough, but if you persevere, fantastic views await at the top.
Well prepared
To make this climb safe and fun, good preparation is important. For instance, it is wise to wear sturdy hiking shoes, as the path can be slippery and uneven in some parts. With shoes that have enough grip, you will avoid slipping on the loose stones. In addition, it is smart to avoid the heat by going early in the morning or later in the afternoon. In fact, it can get very hot during the day, especially in summer, and there is hardly any shade on the route.
As there are no places to eat or drink along the way, it is also important to bring enough water and possibly a snack. The climb can be quite strenuous, and staying well hydrated is important, especially if you want to enjoy the view at the top for a bit longer. And you'll definitely want to capture that view, so don't forget to bring your phone or camera. In clear weather, you can even see Ibiza in the distance!
Furthermore, it is good to remember that the Peñón de Ifach is a protected nature reserve. This means you have to be respectful of the environment. Stay on the marked paths, don't throw away litter and be quiet at the places where birds nest. Indeed, the Ifach is home to special animals, such as the Eleonora's falcon and several lizard species, and it would be a shame to disturb their habitat.
What to expect at the top
Once you reach the top, you immediately know why this climb is so popular. The view is simply stunning. You look out over the coast, the port of Calpe and the endless Mediterranean Sea. The steep cliffs, blue waters and the town below make this a truly unique place.
Apart from the views, there is also plenty to see for nature lovers. The Ifach is full of special plants and animals. It is home to rare birds such as the Eleonora's falcon, and with a bit of luck you can even spot a few wild goats climbing the steep cliffs.
Plan your adventure well
Want to climb the Ifach? Then make sure you set off well prepared. As it is a popular nature reserve, it can sometimes be crowded. In high season, you may even need a permit, so check in advance.
After the climb, it's great to take a rest. A refreshing dip in the sea, a drink on a terrace or rest in comfortable accommodation. However you end it, you will look back on this special experience with a satisfied feeling. Whether you go for the challenge, the nature or the views, this trip is sure to stay with you!
